Studio Policies, 2020-2021
BOOKS AND MATERIALS: Students are expected to bring all their current books and materials and a pencil to every lesson. The cost of new books or materials will be added to the monthly/quarterly invoice. Each student will also need to have a spiral notebook for assignments and a 3-ring binder with clear pockets on the front and back covers. A metronome is necessary for all students playing any level of technique. There are several free metronome apps available.
MAKEUPS AND MISSED LESSONS: In order to make appropriate progress, students are expected to honor their lesson times regularly and promptly throughout the year.
* There are NO makeups for a "no-call/no-show".
* There are no makeups for an extended vacation.
* Makeups will be made for illness and family emergencies (If this happens within the 24 hour window, please text/email me and I will assign a makeup credit).
If you cannot do a makeup in the week that you miss a private lesson, you may attend an APP lesson or do two lessons in a future week. See the MMS calendar to register yourself.
Lessons end at the scheduled time no matter if they begin late.
* You have 90 days to use your makeup credits...this policy ends on August 1, at which time any remaining credits will expire.
SNOW DAYS/ZOOM LESSONS: When we have school closings or Pandemic restrictions, we will all stay safely at home. All students will do lessons by Zoom or phone. Please be prepared with all music, your assignment notebook (and an extra sheet of paper for the new assignment) and a pencil. Set your phone/iPad/tablet/computer near the keyboard so I can see both your hands on the keyboard from the side and "looking" down as though I was looking over your shoulder. Just before your scheduled lesson time, sign in to Zoom via the blue Zoom link you will find on your lesson time on the Music Staff calendar or home page. You may enter the Waiting Room early and I will admit you when it is your lesson time. If you are unable to use any of the above electronic devices for a Zoom lesson, we can use our phones and manage that way. All APP students (in studio) will reschedule to the next available session.
RECITALS: Participation in the Almost Summer Awards Recital is expected. Be sure to mark your calendar well in advance! The bi-monthly Good Deed Recitals are held in Evergreen Cottage on the GT Pavilions campus.
MASTERCLASS PERFORMANCES: This event takes place once a year for invited students in grades 6-12 and another annual Masterclass for adult students. Students will perform one polished piece for a professional pianist/teacher in a non-competitive situation. The judge’s comments contribute to the attending/performing student’s learning, future work and success. The fee will be billed separately.
THE NATIONAL GUILD AUDITIONS: This is an annual, non-competitive event that includes playing several pieces from memory with the corresponding scale and cadence. The adjudicator provides supportive comments aimed at encouraging positive changes in the pianist. Date, time and location TBA. The fee will be billed separately.
DISMISSALS AND TERMINATION: If, for any reason, you must stop lessons, 1 month's notice or 1 month's pay is required within 30 days. Your full intentions MUST BE SUBMITTED IN WRITING via hardcopy or email. Regrettably, I will have to dismiss a student if any of these circumstances occur:
• Failure to pay tuition on time more than twice
• Persistent absences
• Uncooperative attitude
• Failure to follow practice as instructed
*Lack of progress due to insufficient practice or unfulfilled requirements
